Course is 6 ECTS for LUT and Aalto students (includes additional assignment) and 5 ECTS for students in other Universities. Course is part of Co-Op Network Studies (CNS)- basic studies which are open for students in this University teaching network.

After completing the course student understands the special characteristics of co-operatives from the management and corporate purpose point of view. Student understands the characteristics of co-operatives and how these influences especially to the governance, decision-making, marketing and management of co-operatives. The student can analyze and report the business of selected case-co-operative from different perspectives in the independent learning assignment.


The impact of characteristics of co-operative business model to the firm´s goal, dual-nature, ownership, surplus distribution, governance structure, decision-making and marketing and management. The focus of analysis include both large and small co-operatives, including consumer, producer- and worker co-operatives.

Teaching Methods 

Active participation virtually to the course discussions and commentary, 20 h. Independent familiarization with literature (and additional material) 40 h, Independent learning assignment plan 20 h. Independent learning assignment of chosen case-cooperative 60 h. Opponent of other student's learning assignment, 10 h. Additional assigment (essay of an artcile) for LUT and Aalto students, 24 h. Assessment scale and assessment methods 

Final grade 0-5. Evaluation 0-100 points. Independent learning assignment 60 %, Moodle-exam 20% and essay 20 %. Active participation to virtual discussions in the course and approved learning assignment plan. All tasks should be passed to get the final grade.(Edit. 22.1.2020)
