Aims 

After having completed the course, student should be able to:

  • recognise wide range of existing Design Methods with a focus on Design Creativity and Innovation
  • decompose the problem situation into inventive design problems.
  • model and modify the model of a product or process to systematically generate inventive ideas.
  • recognize evolution patterns and predict the evolution of the product or process.
  • apply inventive design tools for the product development.
  • visualize and present the generated ideas.

Introduction: General framework of design for innovation; the main classification schemes of Design approaches; cognitive studies on designing; design creativity and its influential factors; Patent landscaping
Part 1. Function modeling
Part 2. Trimming. System reduction.
Part 3 Cause effect chain analysis
Part 4 Axiomatic design
Part 5 DFMA
Part 6 Trends of Engineering System Evolution (TESE)

 
Teaching Methods 

Online course

Virtual lectures (videos, texts) 24 h, quizes and exercises 5 h,  online discussions 5 h, project work (assignments + virtual model) 30 h, peer review 10 h, WebEx 4 h. Total workload 78 h.
