By the end of the course, here are the main objectives for students to achieve after taking this course:

(i) The student is expected to be able to carry out a research project step by step as a group work: Planning, implementation, and reporting;

(ii) The student is expected to utilize the literature effectively from the project field, and to work as a team member in a role assigned;

(iii) The student is expected to write a scientific report from the work conducted;

(iv) The student is expected to report and deliver the work conducted through oral presentation.


Planning, implementation, and reporting a research project related to water treatment. Project includes a literature survey, planning experimental work, conducting experiments, analyzing the results and reporting (written and oral). Lectures and seminar related to the project work are included. Literature survey and planning part will start (during the period of week 3) and experimental work (during the period of week 8 - 11) will be carried out in Lappeenranta.

Teaching Methods 

20 hr of lecture and seminar, 50 hr of individual literature work to collect background information, 50 hr of laboratory and reporting according to given instruction, and 140 hr of independent study. Total workload 260 h.

Assessment scale and assessment methods 

0 – 5, Assignment (20%), Literature review report (30%), Oral presentation during seminar (20%), Laboratory scientific report (30%).
