Tavoitteet 

Students will learn and apply a number of design principles for creating the user experience. Via a design bootcamp, students will be able to:
1. Use ideation techniques that go beyond brainstorming to propose innovative solutions, software products, services and systems
2. Conduct rapid prototyping to gather user feedback, inform design decisions and iteratively improve design solutions
3. Build and validate diverse forms of user interfaces including mobile, wearable and tangible user interfaces
4. Use usability testing and user acceptance methods to assess and validate proof of concept and prototypes, including the use of eye-tracking and emotion studies
5. Integrate user experience design methods into the wider software development and innovation lifecycle

 
Sisältö 

The course will cover the following topics.
1. Design theories, principles and methods: what are the different ways to approach a design task? What methods can be used?
2. User experience in design practices. How can we design for a better user experience?
3. Co-design. How and why should we involve different stakeholders in the design process?
4. Ideation. What tools and techniques can we use to help understand a problem?
5. Prototyping. What are the different stages of prototyping and what can we find out from different types of prototype?
6. Customer evaluation. What evaluation techniques should we use with customers to get feedback on design ideas?
7. Expert evaluation. How can design experts contribute to evaluation of prototypes?
8. Usability studies and usability techniques, including eye-tracking and emotion. How can we conduct studies that determine the usability of a new product? Can people use it as planned? Do they want to?
9. Web analytics. What does a users interactions with a website tell us about the effectiveness of the design?
10. Design patterns and mental models. How can we use design patterns and mental models to improve design?
In groups, students are asked to develop and validate a design for a new software product or service during bootcamp sessions in the CODER lab. In each session, students will learn and apply methods to their design and iteratively improve and develop their design to a working prototype for usability testing.

 
Suoritustavat 

Weekly Design bootcamp sessions 28hrs. Lecture preparation and mandatory readings 30hrs. Prototyping and design activities 34hrs. Usability testing 36hrs. Preparation and presentation of design portfolio and individual reflections 28h. Total 156hrs.

Students will complete many hands-on activities and interact with their fellow students and representatives of real users as they experience a completely different way of learning how to develop human-centric software and information systems, services, and socio-technical systems.
