Tavoitteet 
  1. Understand what it means to conduct research openly and the benefits and impact of doing so;
  2. Identify suitable tools to help you embrace OS at each stage of the research lifecycle;
  3. Understand the key challenges that can arise when researching in the open and how to address these;
  4. Ability to engage in the process of developing open access in your own research and for the benefit of the research field and society
 
Sisältö 

The online course has four sections. Sections are independent and explore different aspects of open science from the perspective of research work.

Section A: Why Open Science This section focuses on the key motivators for adopting and promoting Open Science practices for individuals and institutions. Different definitions of Open Science and explored and the students are encouraged to consider how Open Science principles apply to their own research work.

Section B: Opening Research This section focuses on the principles and processes of opening the research process. These include using open notebook facilities, engaging in citizen science, making use of crowd science, adopting pre/post review processes, and considering Responsible Research & Innovation principles.

Section C: Opening Data This section focuses on both opening your own data and utilising already available data in your research. The Section looks into benefits of creating a data management plan, using and choosing open repositories, creating metadata, and the legal aspects of opening data from the perspectives of copyright, IPR, contracts, privacy, and data protection.

Section D: Open Access The last section focuses on Open Access to research results. The learning is based on understanding different types of Open Access publishing modes, using institutional repositories for self-archiving, avoiding predatory publishers, and engaging in open peer review.

Arviointiskaala ja arviointimenetelmät 

Students complete the course by  

  1. giving feedback on the Finnish Open Science Online Resource which is located at www.findocnet.fi.
  2. writing an essay (max 2 pages) on how they can apply the open science principles and practices in their own research.

The course is assessed as pass/fail.
