Degree Structure

The Master's degree (120 ECTS) consists of core studies, specialisation studies, minor studies and free elective studies.

The core studies include an obligatory work internship of 2 ECTS cr. The credits exceeding the obligatory amount are included in elective studies.
The student takes 6 ECTS cr. at the minimum of at least one of the laboratory courses. Note that in some modules of the specialisation studies
there are requirements concerning the laboratory courses. The modules Electrical Drives, Power Electronics and Design of Electrical Machine contain
laboratory assignments in the course Laboratory Course in Electrical Power Engineering. The course BL50A1600 Elektroniikan laboratoriotyöt 2/Electronics, Laboratory Course 2
is taught in Finnish.
Students who have not completed their B.Sc. studies at LUT, must take BH60A4600 Introduction to M.Sc. Studies 1 of 1 ECTS cr.

The specialisation studies include a Master's Thesis and a seminar. The student includes two to three elective modules in her/his specialisation studies.
If the total of major studies exceeds 80 cr., no minor subject is required.

The extent of the minor studies is a min. of 20 ECTS cr.
The following minors are recommended for the M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering:
EnDSaBT Bioenergy Technology
YmDSaResp Environmental Responsibility
If the total of specialisation studies exceeds 80 cr., no minor studies are required.

The student must take a suitable amount of free elective studies to reach the total of 120 ECTS required for the Master's degree. The student may include any courses taught at LUT, also another minor, in his/her Master's degree. Studies in other domestic or foreign higher education institutions, the leadership training provided by the National Defence Forces of Finland and a max. of 8 ECTS of internship (BL10A8000 DI-tutkinnon työharjoittelu 2-10 ECTS) can be included in the degree by application; the studies are approved by the Head of degree programme.


The MSc in Electrical Engineering is also available as a Double Degree Programme for the students of our partner universities. The Double Degree Programme has a separate degree structure of its own. The double degree students choose either Electrical Machines and Drives, Control Systems or Electricity Market as their specialisation.
